This story starts with Davie Alexendar who keeps his own boat in Auchinstarry. For many years Davie looked after Nolly on behalf of the Unity charity and knows more about boats that anyone we have met. Davie knew every inch of Nolly and kept her cruising round the Canals of Lanarkshire long after others had lost interest.
One of the best days of the whole project was the day we sailed Nolly up the Canals to Kirkintilloch. We had beautiful blue skies and Davie spent most of the journey trying to teach us how to turn Nolly round some pretty sharp bends - as he would say every turn in Nolly is a 'handbrake' turn ! Without Davie, Nolly would have been in the scrapyard (or bottom of the canal) and we will be forever grateful for the help and advice Davie gave us throughout the project. |
